Description:
Where the pit lane of Deutschlandring would have been.
This track built by concentration camp prisoners was intended to be a replacement for the Nordschleife in the 1000 Year Reich motorsport plans: 1.000.000 spectators arriving in 300.000 cars were expected to attend the races. By 1940, only the tarmac has been laid down and no official racing ever took place there. It was forgotten and lay dormant, nothing more than a series of peculiar roads in Eastern Germany until someone rediscovered it, either by accident or by hearing the stories about it. At least 15 people died here in illegal races and lapping sessions, crashing out of insanely fast corners into rock faces or into the thick forest and dark gorges off one of the old hillclimb section’s 16 hairpins, until the police cracked down by posting speed limits, speed cameras and forbidding motorcycle riding in the whole area.
