Contrary to popular belief, late-70s Detroit barges CAN be mean-looking. |

This reminds me of the car from "The Crow." It's either a Thunderbird or Cougar from about this era, can't quite tell which model or which year, painted candy-apple red with a black vinyl top, nice wheels and a supercharger sticking through the hood. That is such a gorgeous car. |

This was back in the day when NASCAR sponsors actually, for the most part, had something to do with cars. No risk of getting stuck in a Viagra-sponsored car back then. |

Yup, pre 1990 unless your company made engine oil or chewing tobbacco, you wouldn't even think of sponsoring a NASCAR stock car. When Wally Dallenbach showed up at the Daytona 500 a few years back with a car sponsored by Hayes Modems, I knew I was startin' to get old

Somewhere in my chest of old videotapes I have the 1987 Daytona 500 on VHS, that brings back some memories. Richard Petty, Tim Richmond, Neil Bonnet, Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, etc. Considering how old that is, every time I watch it I can't help but think "My Gawd, they're all drivin' my Grandma's car! And what do ya know? THere actualy WAS a time that Benny Parsons was out on the track and not in the booth! Oh yeah, and TV graphics in the 80's SUCK

Hey, Benny won the '73 championship! He used to be really good. And I watch old NASCAR races all the time. Ones I have on tape and ones they show on SpeedVision. It's amazing... the cars used to actually resemble real cars. My favorite races are the '87 Winston and the '76 Daytona 500 |

Yeah, but considering I wasn't born untill 77' he's always been the retired racer to me
:-) I also have the 87' Busch Clash on that tape too, memorable cuz it was the year that Ricky Rudd took the #15 Wrangler T-Bird and flipped it four times down the front stretch. Ahhh, those were the days, and evey time I see that replay of the 76' Daytona, I keep thinking that it's a movie, cuz' no real race could ever really end like that right? |

No joke! That is just the most ridiculous finish ever. And the thing is, it was a helluva race even before the demolition derby ending. Two of NASCAR's three best drivers EVER at the top of their games going at it... DAMN, that's awesome to watch. And I wasn't born 'till '81, but I've studied NASCAR's history a lot. |

I was never a big fan of NASCAR. Watching 30 "stock cars" go in circles for 2 hours is not my idea of a good time. The two road races every season I watch, but nothing else. That's why the "Speed Channel" pisses me off. It should be called the Nascar channel. Gone is the rally coverage, motorcycle racing, autocrossing, road racing, drag racing, and every other form of motorsports that interest me. Here are shows like "NASCAR Tech" and crap like that. I don't mean to sound like an arrogant ricer, but NASCAR Tech doesn't interest me because they've been using the exact same technology for thirty years. What's the point in dedicating a whole show to something that never changes? |

When did they stop running at Riverside, anyway?
From what I hear, Riverside's a shopping mall now. What a goddamn travesty. |
