Description:
He goes into today's race as a replacement for Sterling Marlin. All he wants to do is gain experience in Winston Cup racing, and maybe to get a good finish. He wins the race. First driver to do that in their 2nd start since 1960. Pretty damn cool.

Me being a fan of the Dodge boys in Nascar (and the fact that Sterling Marlin and the #40 Coors car is my favorite), I went nucking futs when he won...

Did you see his dad crying when he was being interviewed? That was amazing stuff.

And the talent of the young drivers in NASCAR now is just amazing. The next few years could be a new golden age...

Update... well, he won the 2003 Rookie of the Year, and if he hadn't been fined 25 points earlier this season for something that was an honest mistake, he'd be 2nd in points right now >:/

...because of that penalty, he narrowly missed the chase for the championship, and the highest he can be now is 11th, which he pretty much has wrapped up...he's been the best performing driver in the past 7 races.

#4, Update... well, he moved over to Roush Racing, with a team that is capable of winning a championship, and he has accomplished precisely jack squat. I have 18 diecasts of his (8 1/24s, 7 1/64s, 3 1/64 transporters), but all from before he moved to Roush... I don't think I'll be buying another diecast of his... I've kinda lost faith in him... I thought this 2002 win being his only was because he was in crappy Ganassi equipment, but now... meh.

He is now retired.

He won the Daytona 500. He won the Brickyard 400. Despite only being in the single-digits in the win column, he made those victories count. My fandom for him certainly faded in his Roush years (and I was an ardent Ford hater at the time)... he rejuvenated his career when he went back to Ganassi.

Crazy to think my participation in this pokey little social website has encapsulated a successful driver's entire Nascar Cup career.
