MSN Photo and numerous other free photo hosting sites have disallowed hotlinking. Obviously this is a problem for those on here who produce their own content (photos, photoshops, etc.) and don't have web-hosting. I was thinking about getting a decent-sized account on some host (perhaps Boomspeed, which will give you 100MB for $6/mo).

Any thoughts on this? I want to know WHO would use it (I'd offer it for free, you'd just have to email your pics to me and wait for me to post them), and if anyone has any recommendations as to what service would be best.

OK. I'm just trying to see if it would be worth the effort to set up one large offsite storage repository. I'll wait for more people to get onto the site and see what they think...

#4, I'd throw together a quick upload script if the place you go with supports PHP. That way you wouldn't have to get the pics by email. Maybe some sort of password protection as well or you can just do an .htaccess thing so the pics on there can only be linked on the domains of your choice (also easy to do).

I was actually thinking of making pic hosting part of the ultra subscription but I just don't think I could afford to do that right now.

Just checked web1000. They expect that a certain amount of the bandwidth you consume will be HTML page views. Since I just want to serve files, that may not be ideal.

#5, Any suggestions for a cheap host? I'll pay the bills if they're reasonable.

I'd use it. Hell, I'd have to. Goddamn Microsoft. Funny, though, I thought MSNphotos was for sharing photos....

#8, Actually, you're one of the specific reasons I was thinking of doing this (IF I can find a good host for the purpose). I don't want to have to re-link your pics too many more times, but I want to keep them up here. :-)

#9, Yeah, I want to keep them up here too. Some of them took a lot of effort. Most of them didn't, but what the hell, it's worth it for those that did.

Do you have any idea how much bandwidth the Ricecop main site consumes? And what about RiceOrNot itself?

Rice or not has done 13 gigs so far this month, ricecop has done 19 gigs.

Holy cow. And you're only serving HTML off of RiceOrNot (well, that and a couple of small graphics). Just trying to gauge what we'd need for a transfer limit.

#16, I think 10 gigs would be fine since not everyone would be using this and most images kind of get lost once they're out of the newest images list.

I'm still thinking of going with Boomspeed. $6/mo. and they'll give 100MB, hotlinking, and "unlimited usage". They'll also allow the creation of webpages and FTP access.
