Description:
This is the '84 Super Duty Fiero that paced Indy. First mid-engine car to do so, it had a trick version of Pontiac's 2.5L "Iron Duke". While the Duke was a 151, the Super Duty was a 163, I believe, at 2.7L And had an hp rating of 232, comapered to the production engine's 92. Versions of the engine had up to 370hp, with some rumored to push 500. I believe the 370hp version was all motor as well.

LEMMING! I'm not sure if you're lurkin', bro, but here it is. This was just one of quite a few, but I couldn't find enough info to know for sure if it was all motor or ran on pump gas. Though I'd bet money they were all motor, right up to the 370hp one. I found, in my search, a dude who claims they made 500hp, but this is the first I've heard it. Anyhow, this one paced Indy at like 136mph or so. (And I doubt that was full-out all she had.)

Na, they're not lemons.. they got a bad rap. I had one, it was a great little car. And quick as hell for not havin' any hp. The V6s were the popular ones, but I don't like Chevy engines in Pontiacs. If I were to get another, I'd either build a Super Duty 4, or do the 3800 conversion (cuz I don't know who make the 3.8L, but I know it comes in Pontiacs (= ).

Yeah, they have for years. That's what the GN had, with a turbo, that's what the new 3800 in all the newer GMs is. Like the GTP, except it's supercharged. Been around for years.

#5 Might have been the 4, believe it or not. They hauled ass off the line, but didn't have much top end due to lack of hp. I had mine up around 100 or so once. It was fun, but you could tell she wasn't likin' it too much. No real shake or shudder to speak of, but she didn't feel like she had a whole lot more.

#7 Considering there's nothin' up front but headlights, a radiator, and a spare, anything's possible. Though the 2.8L wasn't a great powerhouse. Maybe it had mods. Though I have heard people say it gave the Fiero sick performance due to her weight. Heaviest I've heard of was 2740, fully loaded w/the 6.

Some guy around here dropped a 350 in his. That's pretty sick. But I wouldn't want to kill the handling like that.. that was half of what I loved about the car. Besides, why would you want to when a pulley change on an S/C 3800 gives you 350hp?

i would just put in a pontiac 4-cyl and turbo it...how light would that be?
start with the grand am 2.4, and then add a small turbo to it for at least 200hp

Naa, you could get 200hp out of the stock 2.5L with a turbo, and a little work. But I'd want the 350hp. If some hp is good, more has to be better. =)

#14 Good question. I know it's not that much between the 3.8 and the 2.5, but that's cuz the 2.5 is iron block/iron head. I wouldn't imagine they're be a huge difference. Under 100lbs, I'm sure.

the 2.4 grand am engine is all-aluminum, right? that would shed quite a few pounds

#16 Go 4 it. The only inherent problems Fieros had that I know of were a small engine compartment, loooong cooling lines, and on the 4s if the head gasket or valve cover gasket leaked, the oil SOMETIMES dripped on the exhaust (hence the VERY FEW fires in the VERY BEGINNING of Fiero's history that gave it the bad rap.)
