don't see too many of these... I remember in the late 80s--- my friend Russ raced one in his stock Omni 5spd... needless to say we lost...

Wow, first generation american rice. Got like what 90 hp? Add a cold air intatake at 150 pounds of yellow paint and it will be the fastes 92 hp car in the world.

Actually, these were shockingly fast for what they were.

I don't know what's worse... the fact that they wasted a turbo on this pile of donkeyshit, or that Carroll Shelby wasted his name on it. Definitely the Shelby thing. And 95T-Bird, the Fiero I had (rated at 92hp) would be five blocks away while this was still spoolin'. =) All in all, though, if it wasn't for the Shelby banner, put a bigger turbo in it and it'd be a funny li'l sleeper. You haven't seen a real shitbox til you've seen a car like this with a huge hood scoop. Used to be one around here.

these lil things could run a mid 14 second pass stock and they are cheep, got fairly good milege, and could handle.
Dont give me that shit box crap, my parents have had several omni's and Horizons and even a TC3 and weve never had any realproblems with them.

And if nothing else, it's proof to ricers that Japan didn't invent turbocharged four-bangers.

#6, That was the point I made in #4. My father (many years ago) tried to race a Shelby Omni from a light in his 5.0, and it pretty much wasted him.

5.0's arent exactly real fast, if i find one with just a auto in it i can do a good job of keeping up with it in my moms 2.0 5-speed Stratus, really depends on the type of tires they have and how smart the driver is.
Im talking about a stock 5.0 of course.

#6 Alright, alright, shitbox is a harsh term... my mothers was reliable, most of the time. But they're no damn race car. And reliability's ALL they've got goin' for 'em, cuz they're ugly as sin, the interior's cramped as fuck, and they can't take a hit for nothin'.

#9, This was back when the 5.0 was pretty quick compared to anything else on the street, back in the 80's. In this case, it was a 4bbl. 5.0 HO with a 5-speed.

Tin, for the size of the car it is quite roomy inside, especially compared to the simarly shaped civic of the same time period, and they can be made to look pretty good if done right, as if with anything, if you rice it out, it looks fucking ugly.

#11 Was your dad actually racin' him? And if so, is he a good driver? Cuz those HO's were pretty quick, from what I hear.

#11 All I know is the '88 I rode around in for years (same body as the one in the pic) was cramped as hell. Maybe it had a leg up on the Civic, but most things do. I'm just sayin' a turbo doesn't make it a sportscar. Look at the Firefly... takes a turbo to make 70hp.

#13, I get the impression that he was actually trying. He's a decent driver; he can definitely handle a 5-speed a lot better than I can.

#15 Wow. Maybe, like my Fiero, it has more torque than the hp numbers would imply.

#15, Occasionally he does some stupid stuff, though. I was with him once when some ricer in an Eclipse tried to take him from a roll (he was driving a '96 LT4 Corvette). The darn thing went up to well over 80mph, and the Eclipse was leading the whole time because we were in 4th the whole time. So basically, we were going twice the speed limit, and even though Dad wasn't trying the Eclipse driver probably told all his ricer friends that he ran a 'Vette with a Grand Sport motor. If it'd been me, I would've grabbed 2nd or 3rd, slammed it up to 60 or so, then slowed back down to the limit.

#15, Weight. It probably wouldn't take much to move an Omni, and this was basically a stock carbed HO. A quick, torquey car, and the fastest of the pony cars of the time, but still nothing too crazy.

#17 Nice. My mom beat a guy in a GTO once. This was before I knew what they were... she had an old Dodge Colt, back when they looked decent, were a little round, (this one was puke green) and she rolled up next to a guy in a mint, blown, cherry-red GTO (had to be a '68-'72) and I think he revved on her. We were just gettin' onto a bridge. Well, her ex and I were eggin' her on, so she stomped the pedal down and took off. The guy in the GTO was so surprised, he didn't catch up til the other end of the bridge! Of course, he could've easily roasted us, but it was funny. Both ended up gettin' pulled over, though.

Funny stuff. Nothing like an incredibly stupid race.

I get a kick out of the ricers who try to run me when I'm not even paying attention. It's happened a few times--I'm accelerating moderately and then I here a screaming engine moving past me. As if outrunning a car with a 3.8 is even worth the effort.
