basically what we have here is the mountain and a recent picture of the " total demolition" area. yes everything north and west was all demolished but the worst area is the area that is brownish. when St. Helens erupted it sent a giant mudslide to the north and then west along the N. Fork Toutle River valley. it sent a huge ash cloud about 20miles up that stretched all the way to the east coast over a period of a few days. the explosion could be heard all the way up in Port Angeles which is approx. 75miles away from St. Helens. all in all it was pretty gruesome

Particularly devistating since it blew out sideways instead of upwards, it was like a lateral nuclear bomb blast, you were probably more-or-less safe if you were on the south slope at the time....
