basically what we have here is the mountain and a recent picture of the " total demolition" area. yes everything north and west was all demolished but the worst area is the area that is brownish. when St. Helens erupted it sent a giant mudslide to the north and then west along the N. Fork Toutle River valley. it sent a huge ash cloud about 20miles up that stretched all the way to the east coast over a period of a few days. the explosion could be heard all the way up in Port Angeles which is approx. 75miles away from St. Helens. all in all it was pretty gruesome |

Particularly devistating since it blew out sideways instead of upwards, it was like a lateral nuclear bomb blast, you were probably more-or-less safe if you were on the south slope at the time.... |
