This picture is making me sad. I miss Big "E" and Alan Kulwicki. I also miss Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin Jr., Davey Allison and so on.... I just imagine all of them racing around in a big ole high banked, good grippy asphalt track in the sky....

And Blaize Alexander, and Tony Roper....the list just goes on and on...it's sad really, but that's the risk you take for entertaining millions of loyal fans each and every week.

A story that always tears me up is how, in 1992, Alan Kulwicki barely beat out Bill Elliott and Davey Allison for the Winston Cup, and then died in a plane crash the next year. At the funeral, Davey said that he hadn't been able to understand why he hadn't won the title. He said that now he understood why Alan had won, because it was Alan's last chance and he had lots more years to win. Six weeks later, Davey was dead too.

And (going back in the day) Fireball Roberts, and Tiny Lund, and Joe Weatherly. The price is high, but you know none of these guys would have it any other way.

I have that race on tape (W/Kulwicki winning Cup). Sad. That was a tough year. Don't forget J.D. McDuffie. Anyone remember him?

Not to belittle someone elses' death, but I think Dale's is a bit more tough to take, Both Allison and Kulwicki died in aviation accidents, Dale died on the track, on the last turn of the last lap of the last race he had won, a fuckin' Hollywood sreenwriter couldn' t come up with that, it had to be some kind of odd karma in the air for all that to happen. And I'm pretty sure that Big E left us knowing his car and team would win that race, and he was already looking ahead to Rockingham, anothe reason 2001 was a rough year for everyone.

I agree with you there. Alan and Davey... man, that was brutal, but it was just the kind of thing that happens. Dale, though, the circumstances made it tough. But, you know, a lot of people have said "it wasn't supposed to happen like that." Man, I always knew, somehow, that it would end like that for Dale. He'd cheated death so many times, walked away from so many accidents that should have killed him, made so many moves he shouldn't have been able too... on some level, I knew it was going to catch up to him eventually.
