Description:
Dave McDonald's car from the '64 500. It was a really, REALLY terrible car, so unstable through the turns that according to a book I read, Jim Clark was following McDonald around during practice and when they both got back to the pits, Clark begged him to never get in the car again. But McDonald felt obligated to fulfill his contract and it cost him and Eddie Sachs their lives.

see 22718 for the fatal wreck that this car was involved in

Coming out of the turn, the car lost control. Crossed the apron of the track and collided with the inside retaining wall. It was only 2 laps into the race, and MacDonald's car was still carrying it's full supply of fuel. See the "O" shaped thing above the word "STATE" on the car? That's the filler for the fuel tank, they were literaly build right into the sides of the car, without any reinforcing or protection from a violent collision. When the car slammed the railing, the tank split open, and the car literaly exploded. Skidding back accross the track, it came to a stop right in front of approaching traffic, where it was T-boned by Eddie Sachs, his car, also topped off with fuel, exploded as well. Both men were killed.

"I think of Indianapolis every day of the year, every hour of the day, and when I sleep, too. Everything I ever wanted in my life, I found inside the walls of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. I love it all, from the first to the last day in May. On the morning of the race, if you told me my house had burned down, I'd say, "So what?" The moment that race starts is always the greatest moment of my life, and the day I win that race, it will be as if my life has ended. There is nothing more I could want out of life." - Eddie Sachs.

YouTube video of the crash

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ9RaX5rBgU

The video is hampered somewhat by narration, but the angles of the crash are really good, including one from directly behind the wall McDonald hit.

I've mentioned it before. I think became addicted. I live from one event to the next. If there's nothing ahead in the calendar, my life becomes dull, void. Boring. Pointless. Everything seems to slow down, I feel sleepy. At the same time, there's a fear that grips me. My dream is to take part in at least one professional event, be it circuit racing, rallying, rally cross, no matter, finish it and not be last, before I die. I struggle with lack of budget and a shitty car, fearing that when I'll finally have the cash to race, for some reason I'll not be able to. I can't risk that.

In looking at the history of this tragedy some more, it's amazing the red flags that were ignored.

USAC had flunked the car when it came to the track, saying the wheels were too small (they had previously OK'd it during construction) The only way to get the mandated larger wheels to fit in time for the 500 was to saw off parts of the fenders and raise the ride height by 2 inches, further decreasing the car's already notoriously poor handling.

And finally, all of MacDonald's qualifying and test runs were apparently run without a full fuel load, race day was the first time he'd ever tried to drive the car fully-loaded with a boggling 70 GALLONS of fuel. It was a rolling molotov cocktail from the get-go.

Neither driver had to die....
