The Honda Civic's shifter. It's positioned where you'd expect your radio or HVAC controls to be.

Past winners include:

Nissan 350Z, a 2-seater with cupholders behind the front seats (HUH?)
Nissan Altima's bug-eyed taillights
Toyota Echo's center-mounted gauges
Saturn's plastic bodies
Mustangs with 4-cyl. engines
Chevy Nova of the 80's

Seriously, how could you drive this. They're fortunate the car has no performance whatsoever so that you have plenty of time to correct your shifting miscues.

My 2's automatic shifter is located in a similar place... not quite as high up, but just about... it really opens up the interior space in such a small vehicle. I also find it interesting how many minivans now have their "console"-style automatic shifter on the dashboard, close to where a column shift would normally be... I kinda like that idea.

#10, Fiat has picked up this idea in some models. The Civic on the picture has a totally flat floor without any tunnel in the middle (at least after you rip everything out...) and having the shifter so close to the steering wheel is rather useful in the Type R.

I'm not really sure why they don't just mount the shifters on the column if they want them out of the way.
