Description:
The Antonov AN-225 Mriya (world's largest aircraft) carrying the Russian Space Shuttle Buran landing at the Paris Air show. Without a doubt, this is the heaviest touchdown in aviation history. I don't know what the total landing weight is, but the Mriya itself has a maximum take-off weight of over 1.3 million pounds, whilst a Boeing 747-400ERF, the next closest, has a MTOW of 910,000 pounds. |

The Buran space shuttle made one unmanned flight in 1988 that went perfectly, with the autopilot landing the shuttle in a 30-knot crosswind, but financial problems kept it and its sister ship, Ptichka, grounded, along with other prototypes. This shuttle is in storage, one prototype was turned into a restaurant in Moscow, and another one has been unsuccessfully auctioned with a starting bid of only 6 million dollars. However, reviewing the loss of fourteen astronaut lives, it's hard to say if the American Space Shuttle can really claim to be that much more successful. |

#6, or as i said on that page, bought the soviet ones. i'm sure they could have got them cheap (atleast cheap compared to building all new shuttles). |

16 main wheel bogies with 2 wheels each makes 32 main landing gear (they all retract sideways in a big "wave," it's amazing), plus four nose wheels = 36 wheels total. |

Well, if a fully loaded Boeing 767-200 (The W.T.C. killer) has a MTOW of 300,000 lbs, and this one 1.3 million lbs., hmm...this carries the mass of over FOUR fully loaded 767's. I don't even want to imagine what the fuel capacity is. |
