Horace and John were machinests by trade and moved to Detroit in the 1890's to manufacture and sell bicycles. Their high-quality work in that field led them into larger productions, building component parts for Ford Model T's and Oldsmobiles. By 1902 the Brothers had become major stockholders in the Ford Company, John was a VP there in fact. At the time, sales of the Model T were so great that the Dodge's financed the construction of a factory at Hamtramick to build more of them for Ford. When Ford built a new larger Model T factory in HIghland Park, work at the Dodge's Ford plant dried up, and they struck out on thier own using the plant to make thier own cars in 1914.
