Ah, I remember the Thunderbird. Almost 4000 lbs. of car, with drum rear brakes and horribly insufficient front brakes that tended to warp during high speed stops. I don't know whether it was a wheel balance issue or something, but everytime I slowed down from 60-40 mph, there was a noticeable pulsing I could feel through the brake pedal. It was also necessary for me to begin my stops a very long time before getting to an intersection, otherwise the car required a lot of pedal pressure to stop (and it felt like it wanted to lift the tail when it did). Good times. |

Maybe I should buy a Thunderbird or Cougar. I was looking at a blue '95 XR7 when I bought the Brick, but I couldn't afford it at the time. :( A shame, too, it was a really nice car.

#22, They're great cars. MN12s had an independent rear suspension, and I believe they also had a front with unequal length control arms. They're rather heavy, mainly because of all the sound insulation they're stuffed with, but even so they handle surprisingly well.
tips:
--Avoid the SCs (which were discontinued in 1995)--they were incredibly torquey and whatnot, but potentially difficult to maintain.
--There were a few distinct bodystyles. Namely, '89-91, '92-93 (like mine), '94-95, and '96-97. 1994 and newer cars have an interior that is very similar to the SN95 (rounded dash, "cockpit"-like feel).
--If you find a car with a 4.6L engine, make sure you know how to deal with its technical problems. Some of them tend to burn oil, and certain years had problems with cracking intake manifolds. |

#23, Good choice, assuming that it's mostly mechanically sound. The engine has plenty of miles left on it. It will be a newer 4.6L--not terribly powerful, but has some modification potential. Transmission will be a 4R70W, same as in a Mustang. |

#27, It doesn't really matter; pretty much any MN12 after the early 90's had power EVERYTHING. The Mark VIII added some other weird funkiness, but the vast majority of Thunderbirds and Cougars at least had power windows and door locks. |

Oooh! Get a Thunderbird TC from the 80's! Slow stock, but can be made to haul butt! :-) |

I'm actually really familiar with the 4.6, I've been doing most of the maintenence on my parents' Crown Victoria for about 3 years now. That's one of the things that draws me to the car: familiar territory.
Also, it seems perfect for me: I like coupes and sporty cars, but I'm also drawn to large, smooth riding cars. |

I really don't care about power stuff in a car like this, I just don't like them in sports cars. The main part of them that I bemoan is not having a choice in new cars. |

#30, Thunderbirds and Cougars are excellent highway cars in my opinion. The long side glass gives you the ability to see around the car pretty well, and they tend to ride very smooth. Good combination-it's easy to be both relaxed and alert. |

#34, That's quite a bit of money for an increase of 97 horsepower.
Of course, even for the $9000 or so investment, I don't guess you could get a similar car with 300 hp. >:) |
