Description:
May 4, 1988. Las Vegas Nevada, a massive explosion, as powerful as a 1 kiloton nuclear bomb, shakes the desert as 9 million pounds of stored ammonium perchlorate (an oxidizer used in missile and rocket booster fuel) detonate following a fire at the PEPCON fuel plant. The explosion shattered windows for miles in all directions and literaly vaporized the factory, killing 2 workers

I remember seeing something about this on one of the History Channel's engineering disaster shows. They were literally stockpiling tons of the stuff, and the containers they were storing it in weren't exactly inert. Some of it eventually caught fire or something, and it pretty much cascaded out of control to the point where the stuff was actually burning on its own (rather than just helping everything else burn like a good oxidizer should). It got really ugly at that point.

#8, Yeah, a welding crew sparked the initial fire, it grew to the point where the oxidizer became volatile enough to burn, and when that happened, well, kaboom

is this the one from "maximum exposure" on spike tv? it had two explosions, the second one registered as a decent strength earthquake, right? it leveled most things within like 10 miles, including a candy factory...the blasts were incredible, easy the worst explosion that i have ever seen
