The manufacturers thought the Edsel was going to be a huge seller. They only sold a few because they were viewed as "ugly" by the car-buying market. A design they thought would make them rich turned them into the laughing stock of the car industry and they went down in history as a big flop.

Honda obviously didn't read their history books before approving this POS for production!

#7, Actually - the Edsel was a story on it's own. I don't think it is fair to compare it to the Element. Think of it like this:

Aztek is to Pontiac what Element is to Honda.

Pontiac and Honda didn't make the (respectively) Aztek and the Element to strike it rich. They built them to fufill a small demografic - people who want to stand out.

Aztek owners know what others think of their "SUV". The reason they own it is because they wanted an "SUV" that stood out - same with the Element. Both aren't winning over millions of people's hearts - but the people who do buy probably aren't caring what others think.

Even now there are Aztek fan clubs who look at the "SUV" as a cult car. If Honda plays their cards right - the Element will follow suit.

Oh joy, we'll have another whacko-hippie car "family" like the Saturn owners.

I have seen too many "I heart my Saturn" bumper stickers to count, and remember the original commercials when Saturn owners would travel across the country to eat sandwiches with a bunch of strangers just because they had one thing in common, that they bought a POS car?
