Just how do you cell shade? My hands arent steady enough to draw the lines like that. Is there a different way? |

#8, Don't bother trying to draw the lines out directly--I'm much too lazy for that. Most photo/paint programs have a built-in tool for drawing Bezier curves. I think in a lot of Adobe products, it's tied into the "pen" tool, but it's been a long time since I've used any of their stuff. In Paint Shop Pro, which is what I use, there is a tool for lines; you can tell it to either draw straight or Bezier curves, then just set a line weight and turn anti-aliasing on. Using that tool, the only real trick is getting the ends of your lines to meet neatly. |

Create a new layer on top of the original image and start your work there.
First, start with a heavy line, about 2-3 pixels wide, and outline all the basic shapes and hard edges. Then just go back with a thinner, 1-2 pixel line (depends on how big the original image is) and accent the edges of shadows, changes in lighting, little details, etc.
Once you're finished, I'd recommend creating another layer behind the outline layer and filling the regions you've created with solid colors grabbed from the original image. The only real problem is that sometimes it is hard to get it to look "clean", because (at least in PSP) the flood fill does not go all the way out to the line. There are a couple tricks to get around that, but in general it is slow work. This picture took about 3-4 hours to do, working at my accustomed pace.

#15, MxCx did a McLaren, too.
It's funny--most of the recent threads in "Photoshop This" in the forums are mine. :-P |
