#7, I think they're trying to make it sound African or something. That craze started in the '70s during the whole "pseudo-African subculture" movement. |

#12, Yeah, Shirley Q. Liquor is a white guy. I have a cassette of some of his stuff. The funniest part was when he sang the parody of "We Didn't Start the Fire", but he's naming off all the black baby names trying to figure out who their daddies are. |

Damn, its just our culture. What's the big deal? Many cultures have weird non-christian names.
Its America, comrads. Deal with it.

#16, American culture doesn't involve goofy names. The word you're thinking of is subculture. And it's a dumb one.
Names - in all cultures - MEAN something. When you see some Arabic guy named Yahaven Bin Phuckd, that name means something in Arabic. But the black American trend for the last 30 years or so has been to just give their kids some letters in the desperate attempt to make them sound foreign. If you want to name your kid a genuine African name, dandy. But I swear, I went to school with people who had about three different ways of spelling their names (because their parents didn't have a set spelling for it), and some of them involved APOSTROPHES.
In the end, if you decide to name your kid Chi'Wante Dame'on Davion Washeteria Le'Derek, it's only going to cause him problems later in life.

It does involve goofy names. That is my point. America is composed of many, many cultures and some are goofy to some and have pride in others. Having names like Aya Pwinski or Erin Fraramich is going to cause them problems? No, because these names are believe to span from their strong background, family history, country e.t.c. |

Now a name like Tarnisha Jones immediately tells everyone "Aww you grew up in the ghetto. You folks just make up these names. How they expect to be come a doctor. She probably just going to go to nail school."
This type of thinking has to change. People will have to start excepting our culture. We don’t help when comedians use the stereotypes to get rich and inadvertently promote “this is the way we think”.
No, it's not an attempt to sound foreign. It didn’t start in the 70’s either. It is just a way a few parents chose to give a unique name to their child and we really like the way it sounds. It is just variations of the “normal” names like Anna or Tamika with a little of our culture dipped in it. That’s the history of our feminine names ending in “ana”.
