Am I the only one to find Chip Foose - as with most megabucks hot rod builders - to be highly overrated? None of them ever do anything new or different, they just follow bullshit trends.

Any time I look at a car by Foose, Trepanier, Coddington, Brizio, you name it, I always think "You know, this particular part of the car would've looked better if they left it stock. And that one. And that one. And the interior should be a different color. With different seats....", etc.

#5, And George Barris is a hack with no taste just like all the rest. As blasphemous as this may sound, I can't stand most of his creations and actually am less offended by Foose usually. Pretty much my last ounce of respect for Barris went away when I saw his signature in Sharpie pen on the hoods of cars he never worked on, such as the BTTF DeLorean at Volo Auto Museum. Apparently he built a replica of Ecto-1, and promptly claimed credit for the design and construction of the original movie cars, which he had nothing to do with. I've met Foose in person, he seemed nice enough. I respect Foose's skills in metalwork and rendering a vehicle in realistic fashion, even if I'm not wild about his designs.

#7, Okay, maybe I'm a bit harsh on the guy. But a lot of Barris's work comes off to me as either weird for the sake of being different (rather than looking good), or just looks like lazy design. And I really don't like the part about claiming designer/builder credit for a number of famous cars he didn't design or originally create, but built and sold replicas of. Maybe it's a valid loophole to say you deserve credit for building a convincing replica, but don't make false claims to pad your own ego. I singled out Barris in this case, but there are other well-known kustom car builders from that era who did some really half-assed looking work or nasty-looking clashes in design. Maybe '50s kustoms just aren't my thing - though I do really like some of them with subtle mods.
