..and the last picture...
You all know about me being in my riceboy phase with my old white '92 Buick LeSabre (that I never actually drove, no licence at the time...)

There was another way I wanted to do up my Buick... I was thinking of raising the suspension, putting a huge CB radio antenna on the roof, and putting big rally lights on it... inspired by this car...
http://photo.ricecop.com/pics/tcrgrab_rolls.jpg

Call me stupid if you must, but I STILL think that woulda been an interesting idea...

#1, The ambulance used in this movie was the actual "TransCon Medivac" that Brock Yates and his crew drove in the 1979 Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, the cross-country race that this movie is based on. It had a hopped up 440 with a beefed up Torqueflite, and didn't finish the full race, running into transmission problems in Arizona.

Yates wrote the original version of the Cannonball Run script, BTW, mainly because he was tired of other people ripping off his idea with movies like Cannonball and The Gumball Rally.

#3, Brock Yates is one of the most awesome "car guys" in existence.

...I also like the quote with the Japanese team, when they have the lights off at night, and fly by a "Kojak with a Kodak"...
Officer 1: What the hell was that?!
Officer 2: I dunno, but it was going 125.

Yates' book "Cannonball" was a great read. All the stuff you could ever want to know about the races, with memories from a bunch of the racers and quite a bit about the filming of the first movie, too.

He had some amusing anecdotes about duping some cops that pulled them over in the 1979 race (with his wife in the back of the ambulance posing as a sick patient), and about an Arizona cop with a hotted-up Dodge patrol car keeping up with his Ferrari Daytona when he codrove with Dan Gurney in the 1971 race.

Its like my Dad always said, Yes you can out run cop cars, Yes some times you can even out run a Cop Chopper, but you can never out run their radio. (The only Cop in his home town used to go out and drag race his curser with all the local hot rodders)

#3, I listened to the director's commentary, either Hal Needham (director) or Albert S. Ruddy (Producer)(can't remember which right now) went WITH Yates in that Ambulance for the '79 running... they also went with a doctor friend whose wife posed as the "patient"...

on the director's commentary, they say the Ambulance actually had a 426 Hemi, with about 700hp... cost $60,000 to build, and the tranny broke just miles from the finish line. (again, according to the director's commentary.)

It also had a 90 gallon gas tank, and FOUR fuel filler nozzles, so you could get the 90s gallons in as quickly as possible.

#9, Yeah, they went with them, I left that part out. But Yates quotes it was a 440 wedge.

What do you say when you write with no words?
Feel a song that's never been heard?
How do know if you did it all?
What do you do when you've done it all?

Cannonball
Cannonball
Cannonball

It's not what you do
It's how you do it.
Be anything you want to be
It's not what you got
It's how you use it
You be you
And I'll be me
It's just a matter of style
You can't fake it
Mile after mile
Feeling free
If you got the soul
you can make it
Move-em out
Let 'em roll
From sea to shining sea
Ball
Cannonball

What do you do if a mountain is there?
How do you answer to a challenge in today?
When your back's against the wall?
What do you do when you've done it all?

Wow, the moment that Model A made it onto the Non-Ricer top10, this car's score jumped from the mid 1.50's to 1.64. Thanks Adam.

I always liked Cannonball Run, though I actually prefer Gumball Rally. Cannonball Run is 2nd on my list, and Cannonball never even get an honorable mention in my book... which tells me I need to watch it again and give it another chance because it's been a while. Cannonball Run II suffers from typical sequelitis and strays too far from its original premise until they don't really even bother with the race anymore until the very end when ...nobody can catch a wrinkly old Frank Sinatra driving a turbo-four Dodge Daytona?!?! I never saw what is, effectively, Cannonball Run 3 ("Speed Zone!", what kind of cornball title is that?), and I'm curious about it, though I fear the crapfest it looks like.

#19, All I remember from Speed Zone is John Candy being ordered by Eugene Levy to drive a BMW... that's about it. The whole movie isn't all that memorable.

Cannonball Run II was a case where everyone wanted to repeat the "party atmosphere" that existed when making the first film, but forgot the whole part about actually making a movie.

Cannonball was a case of a loose plot, even looser subplots, and nothing really existant to pull it all together.
