Description:
Ricky Hendrick 1980-2004

He died in a plane crash today. Also on the plane were his uncle John, John's twin daughters, and Hendrick Motorsports head engine builder Randy Dorton.

Ricky competed in the Truck series for a few years, in which he won a race. Then ran in the Busch series in 2001 and 2002, until a vicious accident sidelined his racing career.

From http://www.rusty2wo.com/sp :

In recent years, Ricky was the technical owner of the #5 Busch series team, and the #25 Cup series team, and he was the one who decided to put virtual unknown Brian Vickers into the #5 Busch car last year, in which Vickers won the championship.

John Hendrick was the President of Hendrick Motorsports

Others who perished in the crash:
Jeff Turner, General Manager and VP of Hendrick Motorsports.
Scott Latham, Tony Stewart's pilot (was not piloting the plane).
Dick Tracey and Liz Morrison, who were the pilots of the plane.
Joe Jackson, an executive of the DuPont corporation.

Sure seems like a lot of NASCAR drivers get killed in plane crashes... I'm no fan of Hendricks Motorsports but this is terrible...

#5, I was thinking the same thing, Alan Kulwicki, Davey Allison, and now Ricky Hendrick, it's kind of ironic that despite the inherent danger of thier sport, they have been invovled in tragic accidents while simply being transported to the race itself.....

I actually started crying today... on Inside Nextel Cup, Ken Schrader was talking about what the Hendricks meant to him, and it looked like he was about to burst into tears... Ken Schrader is one of the jolliest, happiest guys on the circuit, and to see him like that... I'm starting to well up now...

Well, I now think this played into why Dale Jr. went to drive for Hendrick Motorsports... Dale had known Rick Hendrick for decades, had even joked about racing for him... Dale lost his father, Rick lost his son...

I think their owner/driver relationship was so much more than just business... I think they needed each other for the healing process.
