By the way, I've seen something sled-like around rear wheels of Chargers. Some kind of tie rods???

Most likely ladder bars. They help control axle wind-up on rear ends that use leaf springs.

edit: and I seriously wouldn't worry about a low-hanging swaybar or something. It moves with the suspension, doesn't really get any closer to the ground, and is made of pretty thick metal. Remind me not to post a picture of where my rear swaybar has moved thanks to aftermarket control arms. :p

On a car with a solid rear axle, the axle wants to rotate on launch. Specifically, the top half of the axle likes to rotate towards the back of the car, and the bottom half likes to rotate towards the front (if I recall correctly). If the rear end is supported on leaf springs and no other suspension members are used, this tendency becomes severe. The purpose of a ladder bar or traction bar is pretty straightforward--one end bolts onto the bottom of the axle and the other end more or less lines up with the front of the leaf spring. When axle wind-up reaches a certain point, the front end of the bar will contact the bottom of the car (again, either far forward on the leaf spring, or perhaps on some reinforced part of the car) and stop wind-up.

#7, It was originally designed to fit into a channel that was molded into the lower control arms (they were made of stamped metal). My current control arms are tubular, and the sway bar mounts onto a bracket on the bottom. The end result is that it sits about 2" lower, and all the funny bends (originally designed so it could fit into the stock LCAs) are visible. It looks like a giant mangled paperclip hainging under the car. :D

I assume the picture was taken from a Cobra replica. It has the 427 wheel flares, but no sidepipes, and also has headrests on the seats and a passenger's side roll bar, neither of which the real thing had.

Great pic, though, and I'd still sport the car.
