Description:
1984. Wrangler Jeans sponsors two completely different Nascar race teams. Why?

Dale Earnhardt drove Bud Moore's #15 Ford in '82-'83, and took his Wrangler sponsorship to that team. Bud Moore also entered into a contract with Wrangler. When Dale left to join Richard Childress's team, he 'took' the Wrangler sponsorship with him... but Moore still had a contract with Wrangler too....

Incidentally, the guy that replaced Dale in the #15 was Ricky Rudd... who was driving the #3 before Dale went to it... sorta a driver swap of sorts. Wrangler's sponsorship of the #15 ended after 1984, with Motorcraft taking over sponsorship.

Interesting note: Ricky Rudd was the first person to win a race Cup race for Richard Childress.

Rudd also had a harrowing wreck in the same car at the 84' BUSCH Clash at Daytona, put the car through about 4-5 cartwheels on the trioval grass, have it on tape if anyone wants to watch :D

#2, Ah yes...I heard about that... was seriously injured, but he didn't miss the next few races... he raced with his eyes taped open because they were swelling shut... IIRC, didn't he actually win a race during that time period?

#3, Actualy, they checked him over at the infield hospital and released him within the hour, you must be thinking of a different crash. It was one of those that looked worse on film than it really was.

#5, It was in the bad old days before roof flaps, car spun around, back end lifted up, went 90 degrees vertical, came down and started that bad barrel-rolling

As you can see, he was VERY fortunate to miss that inner retaining wall, and instead, the car hopped down pit row and into the grass where it stopped without contacting anything else

#5, Turns out you were right, he was in pretty bad shape after the wreck, his seat broke partialy lose and he got beat up pretty badly, I always assumed he was okay because the announcers updated his condition as the race went on and said that he had "only been shaken up" so I guess they didn't know the whole story either

#8, Woah.

I think I'll throw in just some other miscellaneous Nascar trivia...

The first driver to win a Cup points race with LOWE'S as a sponsor was not Mike Skinner or Jimmie Johnson. It was Robby Gordon.
Robby Gordon has been racing in Winston Cup longer than Jeff Gordon.
(No, I'm not a Robby Gordon fan, these are just two interesting tidbits of info)
Dale Earnhardt's first Winston Cup race, he drove a Dodge Charger.

Jamie McMurray's career is surrounded by death. After he left his first truck team (#26), the guy that replaced him died in a wreck on the track (Tony Roper).
Jamie is the third driver to win Cup ROTY driving for Texaco Havonline. The two previous drivers who did that died before their time (Davey Allison, Kenny Irwin Jr.).
Jamie also shares another similarity to Kenny Irwin Jr... he is now driving for the team that Kenny was driving for when he died in a practice wreck (#42 Sebates [now co-owned with Ganassi])

You can blame the "bump" in turn 4 for that accident, same one that put Cale Yarborough into the catch fencing during qualifiying the year before.

Rudd was running either 5th or 6th at the time, and exiting the turn, his car just kept on turning, went into a skid and took off

Ironcialy, had the car been equipped with roof flaps, it would have backed into that retaining wall at 180 mph, the fuel tank certainly would have been ruptured, there would have been a fire, and almost certainly, Rudd would have been either killed or suffered major and probably career-ending trauma.

As it was, he flew OVER it clearing it by inches

Some more trivia...

When Dale was running for ROTY in 1979, driving Rod Osterlund's #2 Chevys, he got hurt midway through the season... who was his fill-in driver? None other than David Pearson, who actually won a race in that car. Even though he missed about 5 races, Dale still won ROTY.

Y'know, back in 2005, this seemed odd.

Nowadays, with the wonky world of partial sponsorships, drivers having personal sponsors vs. team sponsors, and B2B deals, you have companies sponsoring multiple cars across completely different teams and manufacturers. This is now commonplace.

Bass Pro Shops, Monster Energy, Menards, amongst a few others… they all sponsor a multitude of different cars/teams across Nascar's various series.
