#3, Shit, they kicked/kick ass in reality too. I mean: this is one of the most badass things I can imagine. And a couple still exist today! And they really sail: not just sit like useles crap in some museum. I say YES to live archeology!

#7, With all due respect, the story about chained slaves is rubbish. Those were free men. They were the poorest of the "free" (What the hell does "free" mean? You always have to pay taxes, obey the law and you will die. Maybe death is freedom?): they were trained to do their thing. It was not easy. First: one had to have some muscle. This required good nutrition. Second: there were three levels of oars. Not only one had to row in a rythm, he had to be careful not to hit other oars. Plus, there were situations in which oars had to be taken in REAL fast. Like 5-10 seconds or so. This required training. It was common for professional oarsmen to change thier ships/captains. I imagine that in aech tavern there were a couple of oarsmen for hire.
