Alright, color me dumb, but why is it such a big deal to get these imported to the US? I understand that it's a big crazy-ass process that Gates and Seinfeld pushed, but I never realy understood why. Any of you wonderful Ricecop sages care to fill me in? |

I think it's basically just the same set of hurdles you've got to jump to get any non-US mass-market car into the US. I don't think Porsche actually took the steps needed to legalize the 959 for sale in the US, and there is a LOT of work involved in that, especially since I doubt it was designed with US emissions certification in mind.

#8, But it never stopped people from Fedaralizing F1s. I always wondered why Gates couldn't get it done to his 959s when others have done it with what is a much more expensive car. |

There's a whole bunch of certification that a manufacturer has to go through to make "their own" cars in the US--crash testing and safety certification, emissions certification, etc. It took forever for Lotus to get the Elise into the US, partially because its original (Rover?) four banger was never certified for US smog, hence the Toyota plant. |

#10, I think one part of the delay with the 959 certification involved the whole crash testing thing. I have no idea how the McLaren folks dealt with it. |

"The 959 was not street legal in the United States prior to 1999 when the "Show and Display" law was finally passed, although an unknown number were imported via the "grey market" during the late 1980s as show pieces. During the model's development, Porsche refused to provide the United States Department of Transportation with the four 959s they required for crash testing, and the car was never certified by the NHTSA for street use in the U.S. "

It does look like a model. Maybe 1:2 scale? There is no way that the person on the left can fit in it. |
