dangerous times. pre 65 F1 racing is about as dangerous as it gets, no seatbelts, no wings, no rollcages |

He might have survived. It is surprising how many people survived old auto racing crashes by being catapulted out of the car (that turned into a fireball in 90% of crashes). |

Ive been doing a little research on this picture... That is a Ferrari 246 F1, which is the car they used in 1960 and 1961, which is the year Von Trips was killed. But I've seen other pictures of his accident and that sure doesn't look like th entrance to Parabolica at Monza, which is where he was killed. I'm pretty sure that's Silverstone, judging from the pit exit and the raised area on the othe side of the track. The British GP was held at Silverstone in 1960, but that year, the number 17 car was a Cooper, not a Ferrari...
Next interesting thing. It looks in that picture like at least two of th drivers are wearing full face helmets, and they didn't exist in 1960, so maybe this is a vintage race of some sort, but I thought that even in vintage races, certain safety equipment was required, which would certaintly include seatbelts.
So I really don't know what to make of this shot... |
