Description:
Fastest Man-Made Object: Voyager 1
Every 3.8 minutes, NASA's Voyager 1 probe travels the distance between New York and California. That comes to 1 million miles every 24 hours, a 38,518-mph pace that makes the 1-ton cruiser the fastest man-made object in space. |

#1, launched in '77 - soon to break out of the solar system.
It's plutonium powered (that short stubby black/purple item on the bottom) and has enough power to last until 2020.... |

Its probably transmitting nothing at this point.
The personnel in this NASA department are probably out playing volleyball today. |

Yeah, it's fast in a straight line, but I bet it doesn't corner like them Japanese and European satellites :p

Yes it is still transmitting and approaching the end of the sun's influence, but Bush in his infinite wisdumb has decided that the project must be defunded.
Annual budget for Voyager -- $4 million
That would run Bush's War in Iraq for about 24 minutes.
Choose your priorities well. |

#8, Way to fuck up this thread.
In case you haven't noticed - $4million annually for a satillte lanunched in 1977 is going to do fuck all for something on the otherside of the solar sysyem.
Don't say mantaince costs because nobody is going out there fix it. |

We don't know what happens at the heliopause, and that's what Voyager is approaching. And obviously there's no maintenance on the craft, but people still need to monitor and maintain the equipment where the signals are received. We are still learning valuable information from Voyager long after it was expected to become inoperative.
And I think that keeping people aware of how our money -- OUR money -- is being spent is important. If you believe that less than half an hour of a worthless war is more important than a year's worth of scientific discovery then perhaps I did "fuck up" the thread, but I do not agree at all. |

30 people are currently being used to monitor this... seems like they could scale back some...
I agree it shouldn't be cut - it is interesting to see what is out there - |

#10, It does not take a team of 10 people $4million USD to monitor the events of a satillite that won't see any major activity for the rest of it's operational life. and what scienctific discovery? More empty space? Wow! It's not like that hasn't been seen for the last 30 years.
For only $4million USD annually, NASA's voyager1 team should spend it on booze. Nothing is going to happen this year and nothing new is going to be seen.
Yes - you did fuck up the thread just to ramble on about Bush and the operating costs of a long obsolet satillite to an un-sanctioned war. Good job.
