If you dont gain more than 100hp with a swap, it really isnt worth it. Unless the engine you had before is clearly dying or the new engine is much more upgradable. |

well.. these swaps are reletively easy, and 3400s are widely available... like patatoes.... I think 190 horsepower sounds better than 135. |

#4, or torque?
the 3.4 would probably have better potential since it was in the grand am gt, and there are a few decent parts for it
cool car, sideskirts blow hard tho

#5, It does, but it doesnt seem worth going through the trouble of a swap. I dont know much about these engines, but that isnt much of an increase in my eyes.
#6, usually hp increase is equally proportionate to the torque increase

#7, not always with smaller engines, ex. honda 1.6 to integra 1.8 swap, you hardly gain any torque |

#6, In response to your edit: ok, thats what Im saying. If there is more upgrade potential, then it is worth it. Like I said, I don't know jack about these engines. |

3.1l v6 specs = 140 hp / 180 ft lbs
3400 v6 specs = 185 hp / 205 ft lbs
Torque, not a big gain... but hell.. i'd probably still do it with my car's engine having 281,000 kms (174,613 Miles). and 3400s sell for roughly $700 CAD ($500 USD)

those 3.8s are mofos to swap into a jbod though. because they are a wide engine. its not impossible (3.8 SC was swapped into a cav). but damn near close. |

nope, 3.8s are bigger... i think they are a 90 degree engine... whereas the 2.8/3.1/3100/3400 were 60 degree engines. |

I once raced a 3.1L sunbird (back when I owned a 2.4L powered king cab Nissan 4X2 truck)... guy was cutting people off and driving like a dick. I ended up behind him at one light when it turned green he took off fast again. I took off too and got in the other lane and managed to slowly pass him.
I ended up next to him at the next stoplight and we both took off. I got a better launch with my 5-spd (he was probably an automatic) and I ever so slowly pulled on the guy again. He was really pissed and pretended he was going to rear end me when I went to make my turn.
I was kinda suprised since I only had ~132hp versus his 140 - musta been the 5spd versus an automatic. I was expecting to get beat since I barely squeezed out a win over a gangsta-wannabe in a early 90s Olds Cutlass 3.1L a few months before.

the automatic in a 3.1l is only a 3 speed. so i wouldnt doubt you beat him. I now have a 5-speed 3.1l cavy. theres a big difference in acceleration. |

This is a very sharp looking car, I'd happily sport it. I hate FWD GMs, especially J-bodies, so you know that's a huge compliment coming from me. |
