Description:
NASCAR Racing 2003 Season by Papyrus/Sierra games.

It is doing something very few other videogames have done. It is actually INCREASING in value. At last check, it was at $90 at Amazon, and you can't score a copy on eBay for less than $70.

Why? EA's buying of an exclusive NASCAR licence in 2004, and continuing to put out crap games. Fuck you, EA.

a year and a half ago, it was going for $15.99 on clearance shelves. Coulda made a lot of money by buying up a bunch of copies and waiting... damn.

Also, this is one of the most fan supported racing games in history. People keep paintschemes/teams/drivers updated VERY well for download. There are also numerous "mods"... TransAm mod, IRL mod, GT Prototype mod, Touring car mod, Sprint racing mod, Craftsman truck mod, ARCA/Busch series mod, Late-model mod, 1988 mod... and custom/updated tracks are everywhere, and it is THE NASCAR game to play online with.

...and no, I don't have a copy of it :(

If it's that valuable, I'll see if I can get some copies in the bargain bins at Staples or other PC stores. Around here Nascar games just collect dust.

I'm running the GTP mod in two different leagues. It's the best sim racing ever, IMHO, and that's high praise since it finally won out over another Papyrus game, Grand Prix Legends.

It's a shame that the same people who produced these games became a group called First, which is now threatening to sue anybody who does any more mods on the NR2003 executable. They've gone from being the most loved people by the sim racing community to the most despised.

#6, Because they designed the game, it's theirs, no one elses, and HOW DARE anyone modify their baby?!! :P

#7, yeah, but wouldn't the mods extend the life of the game, sell more copies, and get more people aware of the company?

#8, They CAN'T sell more copies, that's the problem. All the copies that were sold before 2004 are the ONLY ones that could be sold... EA would sue them like crazy if they tried producing new copies of this game. The developed the game, but they no longer could sell any more NASCAR games, so they probably became really grouchy and disenchanted, so they want to lash out at the world.

Papyrus is dead in the water. All they ever produced were NASCAR games, and EA killed them with an exclusivity conract. Again, fuck you, EA.

EA used to be a cutting edge software company in the 80s - great games, great ideas...

now they are the Microsoft of the gaming world

#10, They have absolutely NO games based on original characters. Every god damn game they have is a licence game. They're trying to monopolize the popular-real-life-sports videogame market. I really think there should be an anti-trust suit against them.

EA has also developed a pretty bad reputation as a coding sweatshop. They're one company I'd never want to work for.

The only Papyrus game I ever had was IndyCar Racing II. Ridiculously good damage for the mid 90s.

Yes, I was that dumb kid who often went the wrong way on the track to take out half the field and watch little bits of race cars fly everywhere.

On another note, in line with "hating on" videogame-associated companies... I know it's trendy to make fun of GameStop's business practices, but, dammit, they've been my saving grace for getting a legit, non-bootleg SNES Classic Mini, and I just ordered an NES Classic Mini with a guaranteed delivery date in just two weeks...

The scalper-marked-up copies littering the internet have a chance of either being broken or even flat-out bootlegs. It's weird to be happy to be paying "only" retail for something...

...I'm also happy I was able to find my old Wii "Pro" controller, as it works fantastic for these Classic Minis, plus has a handy reset button on the pad itself... because these Pro controllers are going for as high as three-figures now 0_0

#16, Prices of Pro controllers stabilized since that last post... picked up another one used for ~$18 at a local game store.

...and holy shit, Hakchi on my SNES Mini has opened up a whole new retro gaming world for me. I know Retro Pis do essentially the same thing, but this way, I don't have to worry about fiddling with the hardware myself...
I even side-loaded a USB stick so I can run some CD-based console games, as well...

...I'm now getting to enjoy Sega Master System and TurboGrafx games I *never* would have played in the past... those two were good damn systems! Shockingly high-quality game libraries, as well. ...I'm also getting to try out the libraries of the Sega 32X and Sega CD... I played those in the past, but only when I *rented* those add-ons from Blockbuster on a rare occasion... the 32X had some extremely polished, high-quality games, the Sega CD... uh... its games library feels a lot like a giant experiment.

Unfortunately, Atari Jaguar and Sega Saturn are apparently extremely difficult to emulate, not just on Hakchi, but in general. ...so no diving into those game libraries, and the Dreamcast requires just a bit too much processing power than the SNES Mini can provide. It appears the N64 is difficult to emulate, as well, but a handful of games run decently enough... and emulated PlayStation games run damn near flawlessly. ...I'm also rediscovering how amazing the library for the Game Boy Advance was.

#17, ...another world I'm getting to explore are hacked and translated games... the fan community that sets about improving existing games, and independently-localizing foreign games is fantastic.

#18, Where do you get the ROMs? I messed around with NESticle and SCUMMvm back in the day, and trying to find ROM sites that aren't loaded with malware was always the most frustrating part.

#19, I've been using Alex Blackmore's Github, Edge Emu, CoolRoms (Australian domain)... and if I *really* can't find something, I go to Rom Depot and Rom Hustler.

...reason I hesitate to use Rom Depot and Rom Hustler? No nefarious reason, their download speeds are just ridiculously slow.
