The NASCAR modified series back then was sorta the antithesis of the "Strictly Stock" class...

The modified class was sometimes referred to as the "Jalopy class"... many of the cars were junkyard dogs, scrounged together with humongous built-up engines in them... some with fuel injection, some supercharged. Lotsa Cadillac and Lincoln engines in lightweight entry-level cars. It was considered some of the wildest racing in America in the '50s.

#2, Eh...same name, different history... the NASCAR Modifieds in the '50s was a national touring series like the Grand National (Now NEXTEL Cup) series... the NASCAR Modifieds actually evolved into what is now the Busch Series.
