...the Corolla had this look seven years before the Impreza... and it pulled it off much MUCH better, IMO.

#1, Check that; though they did subjectively look good, and the rally versions looked even better, I'd probably rescind my want to drive a stock/street one. Probably just drove like any other Corolla from around the world at the time... competent but nothing special.
