Description:
To whom it may concern: Thank you for forgetting to replace the cam thrust bearing spacer when you did a topend swap on my engine last year. You gave me an excuse to buy a built shortblock.

That groove was over 1/8" deep. Engine ran 6000 miles like that and survived 6-8 dyno passes in 4th gear. Don't know how, but this explains why it was getting <15 MPG for the last couple months (I don't have a good picture of the cam, since that was sent back, but the edges were missing on several lobes).

edit: You can see where it actually sheared the thrust plate bolts straight out of their holes. :D

E-mailed him last night, telling him that I was going to be picking the car up today. Got this response:

"Excellent!! We are finishing up the install of our DynoJet 224!!!! If everything goes as planned I will be using the first proceeds to help fund your new ride!! LOL

Let me know how far off the tune is!!! "

the cam thrust spacer on my 350 is just this plastic piece held on with plastic screws! Ala GM factory mid-90s...

now that picture makes me nervous

The new one actually runs surprisingly well considering that I'm still using a chip intended for my 3.8, and this is a bigger engine with a different cam. Of course, I haven't taken it past 3000 RPM yet, so I don't really know.

#6, That's pretty scary. In this case, we think the guys who did the head/cam swap forgot the spacer and torqued everything else down really tight, and it actually sheared right on the first startup. This makes sense, because I remember the guy commenting that there was some pretty horrible noise on the first startup, but at the time we figured it was just a relatively dry valvetrain (since everything up top had been taken out and replaced).

#7, so how much power are you estimating from your new 4.2?

Hell if I know. There are a lot of 'em running around in the 250 RWHP (NA) range, and thanks to parts salvaged from the 3.8, this has just about every imaginable airflow mod...

It's the same block as the 3.8. Cast iron with aluminum heads and intakes. The only common Ford aluminum block I can really think of would be an NA DOHC 4.6.

And, I'm not going to do a dyno pull on this until I need to, which probably will be whenever the blower arrives and gets installed. It seems to run well enough NA on the old 3.8L tune.

What's really scary is that the current pushrods are from a Chevy 305.

#19, Two kits sent out and installed, some minor issues with instructions, and he'll work on finishing the next two or three kits (probably including mine) next week. Not that it matters, because even if I had it now, there's no way I'd install until I had at least 1000 miles on the new engine.
