thanks, man. The asking price was $4800. From the photos on autotrader it didn't look all that bad. Then, when I got there it was a different story. Every single car on thier lot looked like a rebuilt wreck or had major problems. First off, there was evidence of repaint on the driver's door and the steering wheel was lighter then the rest of the interior. The IP had no glass and you could tell shit had been tampered with. The driver's mirror was cracked and the passenger mirror was complete minus the fact that the power fucntion was absent. The interior looked alright, but it had way to rips/tear to have only 89k miles on it.
In the "shop", people were spray painting a Bonneville blue and I could tell that it was a wrecked car. Another thing I found disturbing was the fact that EVERY vehicle on the lot had random damage inconsistent with "normal wear and tear".

#2, Nope. It was Silver Eagle Auto Mall that sucked. I would never reccomend ANYONE to buy a vehicle from them. Howard Jensen "Quality Cars" is another dealer I advise to stay away from.

#8, I tend to avoid places that claim quality of their product through the name.

#9, indeed. I am still juggling the debate whether buying a used vehicle from a private person is better or buying from a dealer is better. With a dealer, you get a warranty, you get (hopefully) peace of mind, but you get the car at a more expensive price. Whereas with a private seller you get more car for the money if you shop right.

#10, My sister overpayed for two used Mercurys from the same dealership and has kinda gotten screwed on both (she paid $4000 for a 2000 Mercury Sable that had problems before it got off the lot). I had nothing to do with her a) going back to that dealership and b) still accepting delivery of the car.

Buying from a dealership may give you peace of mind, but it guarantees nothing. They know how to get around whatever warranty they may offer. I think the ideal would be private sale and having a mechanic you trust check the car out thoroughly.

#11, that's what I think, to. My dad says dealers are better. Funny thing is, he knows next to nothing about buying used cars, or what to look for on a used car.

#12, Funny you should say that! My mom's the one that takes my sister to that lot and has her buy Mercurys. My mom doesn't know a damned thing. She actaully tried to tell us that buying former rental cars was a good idea. Yeah, rental cars.

I'd offer to help, but that's a lot of pressure for a big brother, and I know I'd put her in a SAAB.

#13, Are you serious, I saw a "former rental" '94 Corsica in the classic white with maroon interior with "just 157k" on it for $1700. I passed. Although I did find a half decent maroon/maroon '94 for $900.

#14, Again, "funny you should say..." Every time I relay what my mother says to my fiancee, she says "Are you serious??"

#17, no, not 'actively' selling... getting close to paying it off...

but the mileage is killer - maybe 16mpg on the highway. Time to do a tune-up so I can get another mpg or two

#19, how fast do you drive? Our '96 Explorer EB got 19/20 on the highway at roughly 70MPH.
