Worse than the Zaporozhyzets or the Trabant? No frackin' way.

Trivia: The rust problems on the Vega actually were mostly due to the way they were transported. The rail cars tended to leak, and water would get behind the trim components in ways that the designers never took into account (since cars aren't designed to stand on their noses) and get trapped when the car was placed back onto its wheels.

Quote from the above story: "The Hummer is absolutely my choice. In a time when fuel efficiency is necessary to lessen our dependence on foreign oil, decrease indirect funding to terrorist cells through corrupt governments like Saudi Arabia and decrease global warming before the hurricanes destroy the whole planet, buying a monster like a Hummer is quite possibly the most un-American thing you can do."
—Travis Ludwick, Mullica Hill, N.J.

You'd like that, wouldn't ya commie? :p

Don't forget the Yugo, too.
#2, thanks, I never knew that. Also didn't realize they transported them this way. What genius thought that up?

Speaking of Yugos, I just found a picture of the elusive Yugo GVS in that article:

#5, They thought it would be more space-efficient and allow them to transport more Vegas, due to their initial high demand. It worked, really, but there were downsides....

i love the letter that compares a 61 mercury to a 2005 nissan. in that case i say that the model t was the worst car ever. its loud, slow and has no luxury. not to mention unsafe. and the only color is black, whats up with that? [/sarcasm] the letter writers in this have no clue about cars.

There's one guy that just writes a paragraph of angry words about SUVs, not just one, but all of them in general.

I'd damn sure rather have a '61 Mercury. Then again, I'm a classic car enthusiast, not a commuter who wants some bland "all purpose" car to haul fuck trophies around in.

My neighbor used to have a Vega wagon. It just sat in his driveway with 2 flat tires until he moved away about 10 years ago.

Someone down old highway 19 here has a white late '70s Vega hatchback. It just sits under a tree in his yard and collects pine sap.

I saw a 75 Vega for sale, it was a dragtser with a built up 350 crammed in it. It was bizarre looking to say the least.

#17, Ha! Great word choice

#18, yeah, I had a friend who I haven't seen for years who had a Vega with a 396...

drag raced it until he shattered the rear... he also raced a Nova SS and smacked it down, pulled over to talk to the guy and ended up getting beatup by the guy and his 3 friends... guess the Nova owner was pissed he lost

#18, Thanks. I have a lot of unpleasant euphemisms for kiddies.

And of course I realize that a lot of classic cars - my Rambler included - were also mainly used for family transport. But they have historic value, which makes all the difference. Maybe in 40 years I'll actually want a 2005 Nissan, though I kind of doubt it.
