Citroen DSes were also some of the smoothest riding cars in the world for their time. Some say they still are among the best riding in the world. They had revolutionary
hydro-elastic suspension...you couldn't feel a single damn bump in the road...

I don't know the exact workings of the suspension, and I may have gotten the name wrong (hydro-something-or-other), but everything else in my post is true.

It woke me up. It was a 5.1 on the Richter scale. It was all over the news over here. It might not have been too strong over there...are you in the mountains?

No...it's pretty non-mountainous around here...I didn't hear a single damn word about it.

It still is one of the most smooth suspensions. A swedish car magazine Auto motor & sport tested this againt, among others, the new Mercedes S-klass. In the suspension round the DS kicked some serious ass. And the suspension is hydraulic/gas. I've got a Citroën, I know =). There are gas filled spheres at every tire, and one main accumulator. They function mainly as springs. And the fluid controls the ride height and as shock absorbers. Roughly like this.

You know, I've never really cared much about how well a car rides or handles, my first car was a truck that didn't smooth out anything, so I guess that's just what I'm used to. In my opinion, as long as the tires aren't scraping the top of the fender wells on the potholes, I can live with it.

Low-Tech: You should testdrive my car then. It gives a new meaning to the word uncomfortable.... Leafsprings in combination with hard dampers isn't optimal...
