Description:
Ricecop/Rideroom #30 Renault 5 showing how it's done: stopping on the finish line sideways.

Too bad I got penalized for this: the finish line is supposed to be between front and rear wheels, not between right and left side ones. Damn.

I'm so envious. I would love to get involved in amateur rally.

I was coming in from the right side of the picture in a nice slide. The plan was to kill the slide and try to stop properly. But I thought: fuck it. I squeezed the brake until the car started to slide at about the angle you can see on the picture, kicked the brake pedal to the floor until all four wheels locked and the car glided onto the finish line. Voila!
On the right you can see a marshal staring in disbelief at the intact cone.

anyone see Colin McRae on ABC yesterday?
obviously ESPN is trying to get the X Gaymes crowd into this "new extreme sport"

McRae took 2nd after losing about a second and a half when flipping the car - still brought it home though!

Your car appears to be diagonal on the finish line. Would you still have been penalized if you had spun the car all the way around and stopped on the line? You would technically have finished with the line between the front and rear wheels.

#7, That's a good question.
On another note, my co-driver used to ride with a guy that built an Astra GSi with a Calibra Turbo engine swap. Once they totally blew through the finish line, stopping like 25 metres behind it (it was behind a hill after a long straight, it was moved closer but the organizers didn't notify the crews of that). The marshal was so grateful to be alive that he didn't penalize them.
This is not the end, though. The marshal moved back from the road to a safer spot. My co-driver and the driver parked the car well off the road, went back, stood on the hill and gestured to their main rival (S2 Quattro) to punch it. Needless to say, the guy stopped like 50 metres behind the finish line... and got penalized :D
