Description:
Rendering of the latest version of the Boeing 747... the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, or 747-8I for short... the "8" signifies its sharing many components with the upcoming 787, mainly its engines and cockpit technology. It is expected to enter service in 2009.

#13, Well, summer of 2008, flew roundtrip from Orlando to Philly on Southwest Airlines, to visit my dad for a week during his 60th birthday celebration.

I've been on a 747 once, well, twice, if you count the return trip. Hamburg, Germany, 1996. Thank you for not taking my bags off the plane in Hamburg, Lufthansa, they got all the way to Athens before you realized the mistake.... Dumbkopffs!

I remember that during the taxi away from the terminal at JFK, we passed by a BA Concorde at another gate, that being the only time I ever saw one in person.

Crazy to think that quadjets are damn-near extinct now... no more hub and spoke routes with ginormous planes going between major airports... it's all efficient twinjets that, now certified to fly trans-Atlantic, with more of a focus on direct routes, no matter the size of the airports at points A and B.

It is entirely conceivable that Airbus may develop a version of their Bombardier-designed A220 that can handle long-haul flights... a plane whose size that, 20 years ago, would have relegated it to regional/feeder routes, could now be going globe-trotting across oceans.

I'm sad to see the 747 bid farewell to passenger service, but I'm not exactly shedding a tear for the demise of the A380, with its Jennifer Garner forehead and ridiculously HUGJ tailfin, nor of the pointless A340, which Airbus thought could challenge the 747 by stretching the fuselage to a goofy-ass length... when the A330 could essentially do almost the same with two less engines.

If everything goes to plan, in a couple of months I'll finally get to fly on the Queen of the Skies. It'll be a -400, not an -8i, but I'm still really looking forward to it.

So, the trip to Helsinki was pretty good. First leg of the flight, on a Lufthansa 747-400, was terrible. But the rest of the flights were very decent, including the mid-trip flight I took to Rovaniemi.

I've got the bug now and am rolling around in my head other trips I can take.

Right now I've got a few trips rolling around in my head that I could take...
A combination trip that would include Iceland and Faroe Islands.
Zagreb, Croatia.
The aforementioned Tokyo.
Visit family in Southern France. Unfortunately, this would mean 2 or more stops, whether I fly through Paris or Madrid (both terrible airports). Also, I feel France would provide the biggest language barrier, and I'd be weary of tourist-targeted crime.

As much as I'd love to visit Australia, a 24+ hour journey each way would just eat too much time of a vacation.

I have little desire to travel internationally, but I've always wanted to visit Pompeii.

#30, Did the "Visit family in Southern France" trip... twice.

Madrid airport is atrocious. Iberia is not the best organized, but their customer service is decent.

Heading back to Helsinki later this year. Unfortunately, since the time I've made the plans, my friend may no longer be working there. A new, right-wing government is now in power, and they're passing a litany of laws targeting foreign national residents and/or those on work visas. My friend's company has had to restrict hours of all of its foreign national employees (constituting over half their staff), and that reduction in hours is hurting her financially. Last year, she was offered a job at another company elsewhere in Europe, but at the time really liked her current employer.

Since the plane tickets (and hotel stay) have already been bought and paid for (and I opted for cheaper, which means no refunds, unfortunately), I'll do the trip by myself if I have to. Will be renting a car to drive around to various points of interest.
