Description:
Osella F1 car.
A tiny Italian race car manufacturer's entry into F1 was unsuccesful. Poor aerodynamics, heavily outdated Cosworth DFV engine, in-house fabricated parts, no stable sponsorship base and no money for high-tech solutions. The financial situation was so bad that the company's founder, Vincezo 'Enzo' Osella, sometimes had to work on the cars by himself!

This was probably the last 'garagist' team in F1.

During the turbo era, Osella used Alfa Romeo V8 turbo engines. The chassis was already unreliable and the engine was even worse. In the end they had to reduce the boost pressure so low that the power figures were close to n/a engines. Alfa finally got pissed by the bad publicity that was the effect of the car falling apart or blowing up in the majority of races, and forbidden Osella to use the Alfa Romeo name. The engine was renamed Osella V8 and replaced a year later by a new Cosworth unit. Everyone was happy, Vincenzo Osella probably the most.
Trivia: today Osella sports cars run only on either Honda engines or... Alfa Romeo ones. Talk about a weird relationship.

Things get even more interesting. Not only does the company exist to this day (www.osella.it) but it had a very interesting history:

I think it's pretty similiar to Mianardi. Poor performance but they managed to hang on for years, as other teams dissapeared. And just as Minardi, Osella was the place where a couple of promising drivers started their careers.
