It was one of the site's earliest running jokes, along with the Chevrolet Handcode.

One of these days I'm going to write an entire, detailed, History Channel's Automobiles-like history of the Chevrolet Handcode, and maybe the Handcode II, the Ford Cibra, and the Chrysler Vomet as well. Maybe I'll do them as entries on my blog or something.

#14, I already wrote a detailed history of the Handcode, and posted it on the Ricecop Wiki before that site went byebye. I still have it saved somewhere...

[edit] FOUND IT! I'm editing this post with the Admin page so I can fit is all in one post (OMG MOD ABUSE LOL)

The Chevrolet Handcode was a little known muscle car/supercar built by Chevrolet near the end of the peak of the '60s/early '70s muscle-car era.

The project started out in late 1968 when a group of Chevrolet R&D engineers got into some of Junior Johnson's moonshine. They took a Corvette platform, and stretched it to accomodate 4 seats, they then patched together a two-door sedan body incorporating the front-clip of a 1967 Chevelle, the front bumper from a 1968 Corvette, the roof from a 1967 Cadillac DeVille, and the rear-end of a 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado.

Then came the time to come up with a name for their little concept. The drunkest of the engineers looked blurry-eyed at a leaked image of the upcoming 1970 Plymouth Hemi'Cuda's shaker hoodscoop, and misread the lettering on the scoop as "Handcode." They all agreed it was a decent temporary name, and assumed they'd come up with a different, better one later on.

For a drive-train, they decided to use a custom 545ci bored-out Cadillac big-block V8 that one of them had built in their own garage. Since front-wheel-driven V8-powered cars had been recently pioneered by Chevy's sister divisions Oldsmobile and Cadillac, the engineers decided to didn't want to be left out, so they equipped their project car with a Toronado transaxle, modified with a prototype 7-speed automatic tranny. But then, deciding they wanted to lead rather than just follow, they decided to make the car all-wheel drive by including a Cadillac DeVille rear-differential/axle setup, modified to include the Corvette's Positraction rear-end and transverse leafspring IRS. Due to the power of the 545ci V8, they heavily beefed-up both the transaxle and the rear-differential/axle to accept ungodly amounts of power.

By this time, it was nearing 6am in the morning, and they decided to call it quits for the time being, putting a tarp over the car and all related equipment. The next night, they got back together and, realizing they had used up all the moonshine from the night before, found some rubbing alcohol and quickly exhausted their supply of it. From there they decided that, since they had beefed up the drivetrain so much, they might-as-well pump as much power out of the engine as they could. They installed 4 turbochargers and 2 superchargers on the engine, driving power output up to 970hp@6700RPM and 1040lb/ft@2000RPM. They were understandably pleased by this result, and routed the exhaust through a pair of huge sidepipes.

By then, it was early the next morning, so they wrapped up their work and headed home. One of the engineers, completely inebriated (possibly the same engineer that came up with the name "Handcode") looked at his calendar and didn't realize a few pages has slipped, and assumed that the day was April Fools Day. So, with a raging hangover, he jokingly showed the Handcode concept to the head of Chevrolet Marketing, who loved the car (he had just come from a brunch where he had downed about 6 shots of tequila.) And unbelievably, the Handcode went into production for the 1969 model year, relatively unchanged from the concept. Only 3 were produced that year due to assembly line problems brought on by such a radical design. One of the 1969 Handcodes was accidentally equipped with a less-powerful 510ci Cadillac-V8, so to avoid confusion, the other two that were built with a 545 V8 were labelled as "Handcode SS." As a side-note, unfortunately, the original prototype was stolen from the R&D studio shortly after production of the '69 Handcodes began. There was never any trace of it found.

Due to the limited number of examples in existence, only one magazine was allowed to test the Handcode. The new startup "Gentlemen's Playthingy" magazine was chosen as the magazine. They managed to reach 60mph in 1.8 seconds, but that high-time was due to the test being performed in a monsoon, and adequate wet-weather tires were not available for the test. This is the only surviving piece of data from that test since, unfortunately, the offices and staff of Gentlemen's Playthingy were lost forever in a blazing fire, merely 2 days after the test. Due to this, Chevrolet felt it was a bad omen, and never allowed the Handcode to be publicly tested again. Chevrolet still has not released its own private test results of the Handcode.

The 1970 model year rolled around, and again only 3 Handcodes were produced before production problems yet again halted production. All three 1970 Handcodes were equipped with the 545ci V8, and thus were all badged as Handcode SS's.

Plans were in place to produce the Handcode in 1971, with all of the production problems solved so they could gear up for higher production, but due to new emissions restrictions, the car's power would have dropped from 970hp to 580, and Chevrolet felt that was too low for a car as glorious as the Handcode, so the whole project was scrapped. Another reason for cancellation was the FHWA banning the use of the Handcode on public roads due to the high probability of damaging asphalt and the inability of the radar of the time to clock the Handcode's top speed.

In 1987, a specialty company of unknown origin licenced the name "Chevrolet Handcode" and produced two cars bearing the name "Chevrolet Handcode II" before they filed for bankruptcy. Very little is known of these cars.

Currently, the whereabouts of only 5 Handcodes is known. This is possible since all 5 are owned by the Sultan of Brunei. He owns the 1969 510ci V8 Handcode, a '69 Handcode SS, two '70 Handcode SS's, and one of the 1987 Handcode II's. The Sultan does not let anyone view the cars.

As mentioned earlier, the original prototype is lost, possibly forever. The other '69 Handcode SS, the other '70 Handcode SS, and the other '87 Handcode II are MIA, but one theory has that they are under lock and key in GM's secretive concept car vault.

DiRF, you have too much time on your handcodes. They deleted the RoN wiki?

#15, The Great Spork War actually spanned a couple of images, but it was mainly on 5230, starting at around page three. The War started when a picture of a spork was posted (11520), promting post 11523, which was a post of a black plastic spork for those who insisted that the other spork was a "psuedo spork".

So basically the entire site was divided into the Army of the KFC Spork (lead by CRXtrackguy) and the Psuedo Sporks (lead by Obsidian). I was a member of the latter group, and we were known by our battle cry "HEI PSUEDO SPORKEN!" Yes, somehow GM electronic ignitions were involved. It was complicated.

This may seem really weird, but you have to have been there to really get it. But I think all Ricecops, new and old, understand how running gags on this site can sometimes pop out of nowhere.

#18, The Ricecop Wiki wasn't "deleted" per se, ownership of the domain was just not renewed, and the site went byebye. I believe it was rcpauto.com or something like that.
