Then he travelled to the under-funded and independent Andy Petree Square D team and shocked the Nascar world with a win at Talladega in 2001.
After Square D decided they didn't want to support an expensive Winston Cup team anymore, he decided to race in the Craftsman Truck Series for his own team, Bobby Hamilton Racing, which had been competing in the Truck Series since the '90s... Since it would be cheaper to sponsor his truck team, Square D followed him, and in 2004, Bobby had a fantastic season, and gave Dodge it's first Championship in a National Nascar Touring Series since 1975.
In early 2006, he announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer, and would transfer driving duties to his son, Bobby Jr., and would try to come back as a driver in late 2006... he never did. Things were looking up for him, according to recent news reports, so his death was a real shock to me. |
