Why didn't anyone thought about replacing body panels with plastic ones? It can't be that hard and it would trim some weight. |

#1, You're assuming Ford likes to do things properly and thoroughly, they don't. |

#2, Call me naiive, but I've grown to support the theory that all cars are designed in the best way possible (taking into account stuff like cost/quality factor of course). |

#5, Naive! If all cars were built in the best way possible everything would be as solid and squeak-free as a W124, safe as a Volvo and reliable as a Toyota. Cost-cutting is rampant and always has been. |

There.
Technology level plays a part too, of course (Chinese cars anyone?). |

#10, I have no idea about the Chevette (not that I know that car) but maybe they didn't know how to make a better car. Or maybe it was made to be as cheap as possible. For example, the Mini was a good car but British Leyland actually lost money on every one they sold: seems the materials were too good (and thus expensive) for the final price tag. |

#1, Shelby figured if it packed enough power and braking into a S-197 they could probably leave the competitors' (namely the Vette) in the dust. But the funny thing is that the best defense it had against Chevy ended up hurting it in the long run, the Triton V8 block is heavier than the entire Mod V8 engine assembly in the GT and the Shelby's huge breaks and wheels and manual trans ended up packing the pounds on, the end result was a nose-heavy hammer of a car, the brakes didn't even allow it to stop shorter than the Vette and it suffered on the skidpad too. In other words, you can spray perfume on a pig, but in the end it's still a pig. |

A base Corvette is comparable to the GT500 in a straight line, and humiliates it in any other context. The only advantage of the GT500 is that you can bring along three of your friends to watch a base C6 dust you.
I don't like Corvettes, but I hate bloated, overpriced boulevard cruisers that only really "work" in a straight line even more.
edit: I think the base Corvette is cheaper, too.

I don't mind a fast two ton car....as long as it's bloody huge has plenty of space inside. Like a vintage Impala SS or likewise. I still see no reason why this car should weigh as much as it does. |

I just hate the uselessness of the whole thing. The S197 platform is a marked improvement on the SN95, but it absolutely dwarfs its Fox-derived predecessors and weighs a bit more. Throw in an engine that was probably surplussed out of the new Lightning that Fr0d shelved, and you've got yourself a nose-heavy pig that still is too cramped for a family car. Totally ruins the entire purpose of developing a chassis that wasn't engineered in 1975.
I'd almost contemplate buying a new Rustang if Ford would offer a very stripped GT with an aluminum block, naturally aspirated V8; maybe an improved derivative of the 2001 Cobra engine. Obviously, their approach to factory performance still sucks and I would rather do things the right way.

Best quote ever (from another forum):
"I'm of the belief that Shelby could take a shit in a paper bag, sign it, and old guys with too much money would line up at Barrett-Jackson to bid on it." |

#19, Seriously. His name is being bandied about entirely too much these days. I'd rather have an Omni GLH than one of these, or one of those goofy-looking GT500Es. |
