*Pulls open door, slides into the faded blue velour bench seat. Grabs door by its loose grab handle and pulls it closed, with a slight clatter from the loose, partially opened window. Pats accelerator and spins key once, twice, three times before the 307 sputters to life, revving itself to 1500 rpm before another slight tap of the accelerator disables the auto-choke. The radio comes on at startup, playing the opening chords of "Electric Blue" by Icehouse. Slides column shifter into R with a chunk, lays right arm across seatback while looking over shoulder, and punches gas, the tires scratching slightly on the wet concrete as the car shoots backwards.*
Beaters give me vivid images like that. :P |

I am reminded of the '91 Caprice taxi I used to commute in when I worked at the mail room of children's hospital in Boston, had the same blue velvour seats, about the size of Montana, one of those old-school half-speedometers that only went to 85, a calvin pissing on the number 24 and was driven by this large dude that was always smoking butts.

#2, Don't forget the .55 second delay between moving the shifter into "R" and the actual clunk of the driveline finally engaging the well worn idler gear. :) My old dodge used to do that, it had character! |
