That color combo is niiiiice. R1s are really the top Japanese bike in my mind, thumbs up to your friend.

I knew a guy with a beat-up '03 or so R1 - he used to stunt on it (notice I didn't call him my friend). He let me ride it once at a mutual friend's gathering. I got on it, went around the block SLOWLY, got shortshifted into 4th and gave it maybe one third of the throttle at about 30 MPH and still was almost thrown off the bike - acceleration like that is so fucking unreal it's scary. I love superbikes but I'm not made of the right stuff to ride one.

#1, That, and the fact that every mistake = a faceplant.

#2, The thing that scares me is the thought of someone else hitting me - in a car another's momentary lapse of concentration that may result in a scratched bumper or small dent could very well equal death on a bike.

#3, Yeah. Although modern overalls and helmets are amazing (I repeatedly witnessed guys sliding at speed on the ground after they fell off their bikes, and the overalls didn't even tear: I also have a bike sport marshal license) it's still your mushy body against solid objects.

#4, They may be good, but I work with a bunch of bikers and they all know someone - without exception - that lost their life on a bike. One of my best childhood friends just died recently on a bike, hit head on by an old lady who shouldn't have been driving.

#5, Like I said: they're good but can only do so much. When shit hits the fan, the rider is a ragdoll, flying through the air, often at speeds in excess of 100kph, who can only pray (as if there is time!) to land in a haystack.
