#3, Whoa. But wait. The Cavalier and Sunfire were made until recently, still on this old platform? |

#6, That's insane. How did these cars get through crash tests for example? |

#7, That's a good question, but a better one would be "how the hell did they sell any?"
answer:
never overestimate American consumers |

#7, Probably by a very close margin, J bodies were around forever (mid-1970s) and the platform was never really changed saved for some cosmetic mods and model discontinuations over the decades. According to NHTSA the Cav had good frontal crash test ratings but side impact was lousy and overall it was just plain shit, no 2 ways about it. Check out the cringe worth specs and photos:

#8, Cheap and mildly reliable starter cars for young drivers.

#10, Yeah, it was designed back in the 70s during the Chevy Vega/Opel Ascona etc. times, then the oil embargo hit in the early 80s and the J body went immediately into production. It was first implemented in 1982 when the J2000 and Cimarron etc. came out. |

#9, A stripper Corolla or Civic was just as cheap and a much better car to boot.
I've driven a Saturn SL - Americans have low expectations, period. |

#12, I know it sounds stupid but alot of the adults I know who have children of a driving age would rather their spawn drive a domestic car. Espescially a parent who has, for instance, a job at the Big 3. Take my friend's dad Cecil who's worked at GM for about a decade and it's a fair bet that he'd rather have his fingernails pulled out than see his kids in a Toyota. There's always going to be a certain amount of bigotry directed towards foreign car companies, espescially on part of people who grew up in the 70's. |

#17, Well, it sure ain't California...
Lotta anti-import sentiment here because people assume that it's the success of companies like Honda, not overall lack of build quality in domestic brands or innumerable union problems or poor production planning, that's hampered the big three. |
