I do not miss these, horrible horrible sound quality. But I did love my walkman when I was a kid.

#1, and the tape being eaten, warped or spinning out...

I knew people (back in the day) who spent $9-10 for a new cassette release, only to have it eaten by their crappy car deck.

#1, High carbon metal tape (when recorded properly on good[read: no auto-reverse heads]equipment) sounds awesome, better than CD IMO.

Pre-recorded cassettes sound shit, agreed.

I have a stash of the reel to reel looking cassette tapes, I could sell 'em for $20 a piece or so but can't bring myself to do it.

#4, I love my CD player setup... a DVD player as transport hooked to a RAKK PCM1794 DAC - which uses transformers (no op-amps, solid-state or tubes) to couple the DAC chip to the line-outs. Transformers are made by Lundahl (of Sweden). It is a fairly expensive way to listen to CDs - best budget DAC I ever heard is the Monica DAC (google it) which is an easy kit if you want to try it out.

The funny thing is...the OLD ASS cassettes from the '70s and '80s that my mother still has around still play fine. But newer cassettes from the late 1990s onward just got weaker and weaker....constantly getting eaten or just coming apart. I think they started making them poorly on purpose to prod people into buying CDs instead.

#11, When CD-Rs came out, the quality of blank 3.5" disks divebombed. Similar situation.

I still have a Rolling Stone's December's Children cassette in my desk, the sound's a little warbled but it still plays good.

#10, I want a DAC, too. I use a DVP S7000 (Sony's first DVD player, very high-end but dirt cheap now and built like a tank) running through quicksilver cables - I'd love a DAC and a nice power condtioner but those have to wait for now.

I'll check out Monica when I have the means.
