back when nascar resembled stockcar racing. ahh.

Ah yes... fastest qualifying lap ever recorded in a Nascar-spec racecar... way back in 1987.

(Midway through the year, Bobby Allison had a horrific wreck at Talladega... took down part of the catchfence, his car almost going into the stands... since then, Nascar has restricted the power of the engines at Talladega and Daytona, its two fastest tracks.)

Though, in a mainly promotional test at Talladega in 2004, Rusty Wallace took a modern Nascar-racer, without the engine restrictor plate, and got it up to 228mph (averaging 221mph for the whole lap.)
