Description:
Driving home in a snow storm:
Things I learned - Khumo Ecsta tires are not recommended for winter driving in Michigan. Always pay attention to the BMW driver. Use Winter Driving mode in your Volvo to annoy people. Take the back route home. |

I turned out of my job and got in the right lane. The left lane had a HUGE line of cars since most people turn left at the next intersection. The right lane on the other hand was clear and open. I get in the right lane and start to slowly pass people.
Out of the corner of my eye (through my snow and ice soaked windshield) I see a mid-80s BMW start to go right into my lane where I am. No blinker or anything... I jam on the brakes just in time and lay on the horn. He keeps on going and gets in my lane... goes straight through the next light and I turn right. Jeezus I wanted to pound him. |

#2, basically it starts you out in third gear to limit slippage. Oh yeah - you take off like a bandit with only gears 3 and 4 available. But I'll admit it does work rather well with the Traction Control system when it is really shitty outside. Personally I can live with or without it... |

#3, I figured it was something like that.
I still want a 300TE but if I can't find the one I want I'm considering an 850T Wagon... either way we're talking a few months from now. I still want a Boxster but I've got enough toys and we really do need a wagon, which honestly will be another toy anyway.
How do you like yours, kstagger? It's the NA motor, right? What do you think of the drivetrain, handling, ride, quality etc? |

#4, the '97 GLT has a small turbo charger so the engine puts out 190hp instead of 170hp. The change in performance between the NA and TC is very noticeable. My wife's base '96 seems very slow in comparison.
Quality? Meh - I think the old RWD Volvos may be a little higher in quality. 850s are known to have several issues with losing oil, eating up AC Compressors and various other little niggling problems. Check for engine tick (could be an injector). Interior quality on my '97 is very high - still looks very good with the leather seats and everything is holding up very well. Pretty much the same for my cloth interior '96.

I'm not sure if I would buy another - would definitely like to try a M-B or BMW next |

#5, NA 2.4L 10 valve (B5252S) puts out 138hp. The GLT from 1993 to 1996 is also a 2.4L NA, but is a 20 valve engine, putting out 168hp. Then you have the Turbo models, 222hp and the T5-R with 240hp. The 1997 (final year for the 850) GLT, however, like you said, is a 2.4L with a low pression turbo, putting out 190hp.
I never had any oil problem, it consumes a little bit (255000kms though) but doesn't leak. I bought it with the AC not working, I don't really care. Only known problems on mine are the front suspension/direction components, which are rather fragile.. they don't support extreme abuse. Other than that, best car I ever had. |

#8, yeah - the wife's '96 has been very dependable... reminding me of my old Accord
burns a little oil, but not enough to be a worry between oil changes. Both cars have been very dependable overall... never left me stranded yet. Just some little niggling issues - which is to be expected with 11-12 year old cars. I've said it before, but the wife's base 850 is the best handling car I've ever driven - not that I've ever driven a teggy or anything like that. It can hit the curves HARD and there is minimal body roll - the front end goes exactly where you want it to. My '97 on the other hand has a sloppier feel (tuned for luxury?) I wish I could take the power of my engine (or even more boost!) and have the '96s handling. |
