MEL 430 was a great engine....actually the triple carb 1958 verison was the most powerful production car engine of the 1950s, rated at 400 horsepower. Musclecar review tested a stock 1958 Mercury 2 door with a 430 tri-carb and three on the tree, and ran something like a 14.10 in it, on stock tires.

#5, Making 400hp in 1958 is the same as, if I calculated correctly, making 20000hp today! :p

#6, Well, other manufacturers were close. The Chrysler 392 Hemi was making 375-390 horsepower, and Cadillac V8s were doing mid 300s.

#7, I knew Cadddy V8's had mid 300 power levels back then, but they had to push around ALOT of iron, twern't no CTS's in 1959.
