This may seem an odd question but I ask because of my masters' paper: how did the hot-rodder community came about and did they use any special language? I already found an article about bikers (in Polish). |

#2, Although car customization started just prior to WWII, proper hot rodding kicked in just after the war, as a result of young men returning from the war with disposable income. Hot rodding's early test grounds were the Bonneville salt flats....this is where many of the modifications used to set speed records started, and kids on the streets started emulating it.
That's why many early hot rods recall the aircraft of the era, and a lot of slang (cruising sometimes referred to as "bombing," hot rods sometimes called "bombers," etc.) was war-derived. The use of nitrous oxide also started on fighter planes in WWII.
As for special language: They generally spoke slang-heavy, and there's a lot of hot rod slang, much of which is still used. "Deuce," "hopped," "agitate the gravel," "bent eight," "Flip top," etc. |
