They just get worse with every generation (well, okay, the mk1 and mk2 are tied for best, IMO).

I wouldn't even drive a mk5.

#1, Disagree. Very much so. The mk5 is leaps and bounds better than the mk3 and 4. Just the fact that the 3rd and 4th gens had such pathetic engines (when paired with their weight) prevents me from liking them at all.

#2, Yeah, it was the pinnacle of shit German engines, stuff like 60hp 1400cc or the more famous 115hp 2000cc are already grim legends, told around the camp fire when the hour is late and darkness falls.

I think these engines were made during the Lopez-years.

Also, the mk5 looks better than all of them combined. It somehow looks boxy in this picture, but the gti my roommate test drove sure wasnt.

I don't mind the mk5.

Nice overview of the evolution of the Golf

Picture will need to be updated soon, of course, with the Mk6 about to go into production.

The MK I, II, and III look the best. The MK IV, V and now VI are blaneric, although nicely modded IVs look good.

Wonder if the mk4 front would fit the mk3? I think so since the cabrios of the mk4 era were just mk3s with mk4 front ends.

#10, yep. My friend Quinn is actually deciding if he wants to do a MK III/IV hybrid, with all the IVs lights, and badges etc on a III.
