Description:
Note to self: lifting the front of a car with two scissor jacks is not advisable.

My dad and I attempted to raise up the front of my 6K so we could change the steering rack. Within about two minutes both brand-new GM Performance scissor jacks failed at the same time and dropped the car, which thankfully still had its wheels attached and just missed injuring my dad.

These things claimed to be a 1-1/2 ton jack made of "sturdy steel" with a 1 year guarantee, and this was their very first use, only about 10 minutes out of the box. I suppose technically we were misusing them by using them to jack up the front of the car, but if a 25 year old junkyard scissor jack out of a Nissan does the same thing without breaking or showing excessive wear...

Oh, and I forgot to mention that one of the rods punched a hole in my floorpan when the jack collapsed >:(

LMFAO!!!! GM kwality strikes again!

glad you and your old man are okay, but i find this hilarious - again not because serious damage or injuries may have arisen, but at the mere fact that something as simple as even a jack can't be made well by GM.

i don't consider this "misuse" as i did the same thing briefly before i got my 2 ton floor jack, but for short <15 min stints.

somewhere there's a UAW employee who will say he could've made it better if he had gotten a bigger raise.

edit: just saw the made in china sticker. i stand by my UAW slam though.

Why why why do people still use scissor jacks?

#3, I dunno....I can't think of anything you can do with a scissor jack that you can do with a good lightweight hydraulic jack.

#4, In my short time working on various cars in various places with various jacks, Ive seen more scissor jacks fail than anything else.

But I think using jack stands is more important than using a particular kind of jack.

Our garage now features two 3-ton hydraulic floor jacks and a 6-ton bottle jack. Oh, and the old Nissan scissor jack is still there as a backup. The busted scissor jacks went back to Wal-Mart.

Scissor jacks are lighter, smaller, and cheaper to build, hence every car company makes them for thier cars, and they are absolute crap, I had to do a tire change on an 06' Suzuki Aiero, (not a very heavy car) and the factory scissor jack, which was never-used, collapsed within 3 minutes.

I find it pretty amazing that both folded like that... you *were* using them on a completely level surface, right? With blocks under the wheels to keep the car from moving, or at least using the parking brake?

#8, Yeah, the car was on a level paved surface (my garage floor). Parking brake was on, car was in park. We were trying to lift the front end up off the floor so we could put jack stands under it. The scissor jacks bent right over and dropped the car back on the ground with the front end sitting slightly to the left of where it was before. I'm not sure how we could have avoided the collapse, seeing as both jacks were rated at 1-1/2 tons each and the whole car weighs 2823lbs and we figured everything would be fine. I'm just glad nobody got hurt, though I'm still angry about the hole it put in my floor pan. >:(

Glad you guys are ok, but... why scissor jacks? You just bought them?

I bent the shit out of the one that came with the Tahoe once... backed over it.

I HIGHLY recommend getting a substantial floor jack. They are well worth the 80 bucks and one would lift your whole car!

#1, My dad bought another early-80s Nissan scissor jack from a scrap dealer and has had no trouble with it either. Those things are surprisingly stout.
